Does Diabetes run in your family?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

If Diabetes runs in your family, it is important to discuss it with your primary physician. Discuss with your family, your children, grandchildren etc. Exercise works in many ways to benefit your body. Physical activity does work, it helps your heart muscle gain strength and vigor. When you exercise you will notice your muscles get stronger, you will burn more fat and cholesterol. Exercise is a good toner. For those who do not have Diabetes, exercise can be used as a prevention tool. There are many benefits to exercise, it decreases depression, so in a way it perks you up. There is a chemical reaction inside your body which releases substances called endorphins, endorphins are known to relieve pain, so they alter your mood. For those who have Diabetes, exercise lowers blood sugar, it burns calories, it helps with weight loss, it burns off fats and cholesterol, it even lowers high blood pressure, in increases bone density the list goes on and on, it improves brain function. There is some instant gratification that can result from exercise such as: you feel better immediately, you notice that your confidence level goes up, you feel better about yourself, you are not as depressed as before, also your memory gets better. You can not lose when you exercise, except excess weight!

Don Quixote de la Mancha

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I love Don Quixote de la Mancha of Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
I can see how his idealism helps him to fight the good fight! Through his eyes he can see beyond the uglyness and filth. In fanct he does not see the uglyness but the beauty of things and the goodness in people. For Don Quixote reality is painful, so he refuses to see anything that might tarnish the images he has of his Dulcinea and of the “strength” he has to deal with the giants.
We have much to learn from Cervantes Saavedra’s writings. He wrote in Don Quixote de la Mancha:
“Sing away sorrow, cast away care”. If you think of it, singing away sorrow and casting away care can be found to be very therapeutic. Have you ever had some emotional pain that will not ease? One day when you were taking a shower and started singing in the shower, you sang away your sorrow, you noticed that you experienced some pain relief. So, You have found a song that can exress how you are feeling inside, sing it! No one else has to hear it, only you, yourself and God. So sing away your sorrows and cast away your care. You will feel refreshed.

Family and friends

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Do you hate going to business meetings or social events by yourself? Do you find yourself avoiding people at networking events? Do you make calls to friends that are not at the event to “check in”? Are you inseparable to a friend you brought with you to a party or event? If so, you could have a Social Phobia or also know as Mingle Phobia. Finding it difficult to socialize or mingle with others is more common than you think. Generally people with mingle phobia have no problems interacting with close friends, relatives and family members but however they have an intense self consciousness and fear of rejection or embarrassment when it comes to meeting new people outside of their comfort zone. Sure, it is normal to feel shy or nervous when dealing with other people but the fear of having a simple conversion with peers can be a struggle for individuals who have a social phobia. People with social phobias are always troubled and conscious of what others notice and feel about them.

How do you overcome or deal with a social phobia? Just like any other phobia you learn to control and manage your fear and anxiety of being around or mingling with others and realizing the problem is just the beginning. Get support from family and friends it is extremely essential for those with social phobia’s to have support from people that are very close to them if this is not an option try seeking a therapist.

What is Therapeutic touch?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

What is Therapeutic touch? Many people are not sure and are afraid of the unknown, not many people are aware of the great benefits that can be had through therapeutic touch. For those of you that are skeptical and not sure what therapeutic touch is, let me tell you that therapeutic touch also known as TT, is an noninvasive method of healing that has been derived from an ancient laying-on of hands technique. The practitioner alters the patient’s energy field through an energy transfer that moves from hands of the practitioner to the patient. By doing this the practitioner treats the whole person; relaxes, heals the body and soothes the spirit. The human body extends an energy field or aura, several inches to several feet from the body. So, when illness occurs, it creates a disturbance or blockage in a person’s energy field. The healer/practitioner is able to remove the disturbance and rebalance the energy to restore health.

Although it’s called therapeutic touch, there is generally no touching of the physical body, only the energetic body or field. Performed on fully clothed patients who are either lying down or sitting up in a chair. Each session consists of five steps. The benefits that one can experience are relaxation, pain reduction, accelerated healing and alleviation of psychosomatic symptoms. Therapeutic touch has a positive effect on the immune system and thus accelerates the healing of wounds and terminally ill patients as those with cancer and also helps people with anxiety and stress. It really is something to try.

Children learn from past experiences.

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I can tell you from fist hand experience, that children learn a plethora of things. They might not remember all the time what they have learned in the past, however everything they have learned is stored in their brains. When they least expect it, it pups up. For instance, just the other day I was trying to remember when and how I had learned to orient myself in reference to the sun to be able to distinguish between N and S. It came back to me that I had learned it when I was in the 4th grade. My 4thgrade teacher instructed us during the geography class about N and S direcctions using the earth and observing the sun pluss using common sense. He said to remember where the sunrise appeared, then we should stand up and point out with our right arm to the sun. Then stretch out both arms left to left and right to right, our face would be looking N(north) and our back would be S (south); the left would be pointing to the W(west)and of course the right to the East where we saw the sun was just arising. I also remember one of my brothers making a homemade compass with a piece of cork and a magnetized needle, he put the needle through the cork and let the homade devise float in water, the sharp part of the needle pointed North and the eye of the needle South. I thought that was pretty awesome! Since children are always learning, even when we think they are not paying attention, we must create good and important memories to help them in their present and future.object width=”480″ height=”385″> Learning is part of growing up, learning is part of children’s nature, they are inquisitive, we must help them learn.

Therapeutic touch

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Many people these days are skeptics when it comes to therapeutic touch. I wonder if they have ever visited a skilled practitioner. Many people seem to think that the therapeutic technique is worthless but I wonder do they really know what they are talking about or are they just stuck on the belief that pharmaceutical medication is the only way to go? There are better alternatives than to fill your body with man-made medications that will just give you other side effects. Why not try therapeutic touch? What do you have to lose? The whole therapeutic touch concept is that universal life force energy flows freely in, through, and out of the body when a person is healthy. But illness, pain, injury etc is thought to interrupt or unbalance this force. Therapeutic touch can be a life changing experience. Therapeutic touch is a non-invasive, holistic approach to healing with the intent of enabling people to re-pattern energy toward wholeness and balance. I believe that therapeutic touch enhances the quality of nurturing care from birth to death by relaxation response, reducing pain and accelerating healing by decreasing stress. Therapeutic touch is being used all over the world and has been proven to work. Therapeutic touch relieves anxiety and pain as it promotes a relaxation response. I can personally say that Therapeutic touch has helped me in relieving many of my pains and aches. Why not give it a try, you have nothing to lose. You too, may become a believer in therapeutic touch.

Drunk driver,” hit and run”!

Friday, March 12th, 2010

One bright and sunny day, we were returning from spring vacation going on the CA 86 Highway going north at about 65mph; when suddenlly we felt the impact of a car coming from the right side. The person driving that car paused enough to throw a beer bottle out the window of his car and continue driving away, going south.

We were left in shock of what had just happened, wondering what to do next. We were not able to get the vehicle’s license plate number, we only new that the person had missed the stop sign.

After a few minutes, a good samaritan came by and said to us , we saw what had happened and we followed the vehicle enough to get the license plate number, here you have it.

We were able then to call the police with a better report. The police was able to capture the person, who was found to be intoxicated. Days later we found out that the person who hit our car had no insurance.

When we contacted our insurance, they tottaled our vehicle, and we were left with no car, and in the need to acquire another car. Car payments were in our future once more!

I learned something new, it is good to have insurance and even better to have what is called GAP insurance .
This type of insurance, which we did not have covers what regular insurance does not cover.
My advise is buy the right kind of insurance.

We can learn from children…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Adults can learn so much from children. They are trusting, and worry free, they try to do many things. Things that if we do not get in their way they can accomplish. They can grow up to be good and productive men and women when the adults in their little lives treat them with respect and dignity. Adults have a great responsibility as they bring children into this world. They are their first teachers at home, children are as dry sponges near water. They absorb every drop, which means we have to be careful what we teach them by our words and actions. They copy the adults or even other children. They learn from us how to take important decsions in their life experiences. From the time they are born they start learning what works. Lets teach them the difference between right and wrong, lovingly but setting limits or boundries. The boundries will help them feel secure and not afraid. A very important factor is consistency, if we make a mistake that affects them directly and they know it, ask for their forgiveness. Children are very accepting. We can learn from children the art of friendship and the good attitude they exhibit as they grow in a safe environment .

Need a Vacation?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Are you feeling like you need to get away? Are you feeling the winter blah’s? Wonder where the sun has been hiding. Well, then it is time to get away. Getting away for a long weekend or for a week is a great way to refresh your mind and spirit. Getting away during the winter months can be just what the doctor has ordered. After all, the very essence of getaways is to remove yourself from the stresses and responsibilities of your day to day life. A vacation with the family, couples or a group vacation can be just what you need.object width=”480″ height=”385″>

Traveling during the winter months can also bring some great bargains to places that hardly ever go on sale. So, start looking at your budget and start planning your vacation to determine your destination. There is no better time to go on vacation than at off-peak times when occupancy rates at resorts and hotels are reduced to entice guests. You will be able to find all inclusive packages that include everything you need for non-stop fun and entertainment. So, stop being a wage slave and forget about the mountain of work and schedule a soul soothing, restful and restorative getaway. Get ready to leave the phone at home and rest the temptation to check e-mails. You will soon find that sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

Your choice VBAC VS C-Section

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Vaginal birth after Cesarean and Cesarean SectionBirth, both pose risks and benefits. The Cesarean Section rate has gone up to about 50% since 1996 and now it stands at a record high of 31.8% in the US.
You must discuss with your Obstetrician both options. In the US women have more options than women in other countries. If you have had a C-Section see your obstetrician, he/she should be able to provide you with the information needed to be able to make a wise decision for you. Just remember to make sure you are protecting you and your baby’s health. Full time vs pre-term, some women want to electively have their babies at 36,37 weeks; the truth of the matter is babies brains are not fully developed; when a baby is delivered earlier than his/her full term which is 40 weeks, he/she has an increased risk of neonatal morbidity, respiratory problems, low blood sugar, sepsis, Newborn intensive care unit admissions, hospitalization and some other problems as they grow up.These problems present themselves even on babies who are delivered at 38 and 39 weeks. If your life is not in danger, and your baby is fine inutero, wait for your due date.
