Ear Infection/Infeccion del oido

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I hope to provide some good tips to use when an ear infection is affecting your life. Infections are common in adults and in children. Two main kinds of infections are mostly seen: in the adult population the Otitis externa or swimmer’s ear, and the Otitis Media or middle ear infection in children.
When there is persistent moisture in the ear, bacteria growth is likely resulting in inflammation. If you have ever had an ear infection you know how painful this is, and how inconvenient. You can miss out if you were planning to go to a concert or to a family vacation. Everything stops because when you or someone in your family is in pain, the body is crying for help and will not give up until you do something about the infection that is posing a problem.

What to do? Some suggestions that can help treat symptoms of the ear infections:  Get comfortable and apply a moist, warm cloth to the culprit area; another thing you may try is to apply pressure where your fingers connect to the  palm of your hand for several minutes .  Repeat the treatment several times in a day. You will be the  judge of  your wonderful results. Make sure to wash your hands, keep them away from your nose and eyes, avoid direct contact with people suffering from upper respiratory infections, avoid first and second hand smoking. Your ears will thank you!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

While jogging, have you slipped into a pothhole?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

No more jogging for your, until you heal. On your way home, you limp for the last two miles, took your jogging shoes off, rolled down your sock and found a swollen ankle. If this happens to you again, do not do what my friend did. He put his foot in a pot of warm water. It is a common mistake, however the thing to do for an acute injury like this one is to go with cold, you can soak your foot in cold water or you may apply a cold compress, an ice pack. You must be careful not to burn your skin. Protect your skin and apply a towel  between your skin and  the ice pack or cold compress . The swelling will go down and you will experience pain relief.

After 24 to 48 hours from your injury, then warm packs or heating pads are OK, even then alternating heat and cold works much better.

Have you ever tried a contrast shower? If you have chronic  neck muscle tightness due to stress. Try the contrast shower, start with warm first, gradually turn it  to cold, go back and forth. It is not fun, however it helps a lot. You may like it after a few times. You have to be brave, this shower is not for cowards.

How do I know my baby’s signs of hunger and satiety?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

There is what experts call “The quiet alert state” this state is optimal for breastfeeding. Your baby goes through various states of alertness. You must recognize them they are in the following order: Deep sleep, Light sleep, Drowsy alert, QUIET ALERT, Active/fussy alert, and the last Crying. If you notice all these are important in their own right. It is important for you to recognize the cues your baby gives you, so you can respond appropriately. As you get acquainted with your baby you will be able to pick up the cues.
Two facts you must know, it is difficult to get a very hungry infant to sleep as well as to get a sleepy infant to eat.
Of all the states of alertness the QUIET ALERT state is the best one to accomplish breastfeeding, because your baby is not so hungry yet, not fussy, and more responsive to your invitation to latch on. If you wait too long and your baby starts crying and crying, this will make things more difficult for both of you. Avoid getting to this difficult point.
Save yourself time and energy by learning your baby’s hunger and satiety. Again crying is a very late sign, and it is the last sign. Catch the early cues. It pays great dividends.

Be good to your heart, and your heart will be good to you!

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Eventually everything you eat, gets to your heart. It has been known that good nutrition benefits the heart. Years back smoking was considered acceptable. Things have changed, now we know that smoking is not good for the heart. Cardiac problems are our health’s number one enemy. To avoid heart problems, we must keep in mind the importance of cholesterol and stress  reduction, smoking sessacion, exercise, drinking water, moderate amount of sunshine, pure air.
An enemy of the heart is saturated fat, your risk for cardiac problems increases if you consume large quantities of saturated fat. Many people have said “Everyone is going to die any way, I might as well die happy, eating what I want”.

To them I would say that, theirs is a selfish approach to life and to death, because they are ignoring the people who love them, young and old. If they are good to their hearts, their hearts will be good to them  generally speaking and they  will be able to enjoy their family, and their family them. On the other hand if they  are nasty to their family, go ahead they might be happier without them and the recipe they  are following to take care of their  heart is the right one.

Take care of your heart, and your heart will take care of you.

Headaches

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Just about everyone has had gotten a headache. What to do if you get a headache? Think a minute to see if you can discern the cause of your headache, if your headache is because you have not eaten, there you have your solution. Eating something, instead of taking a pill. Drinking plenty of fluids, that helps a great deal. You can get a headache if you are dehydrated. Our brains float on a pool of fluid and if that fluid is low, you can get a horrendous headache.
If you can not figure the reason for your cephalalgia try using pressure points. Your hands are a good link  to find the pressure points to relieve headaches, massaging  your ears, something else you can try is applying warm packs to your feet and legs, elevating  your feet while you have the warm packs on your legs. Deep breathing is also good, oxygen can take care of pain as well.
Relaxation exercises are also recommended, you do not have to spend any money when trying the remedies I suggested. Just knowing you will not spend any money on them helps your headache.
Ask someone to massage your hands and to apply pressure between your thumb and your index finger with firm pressure, this might be somewhat painful but it does relieve the headache(this is contraindicated if you are pregnant).

Sufficient milk supply?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Has someone told you that you do not have sufficient milk supply? It is normal to feel that you do not have enough milk, the first few days after you have had delivered your newborn baby.
Please ask for help early on to make sure that there is not a physiologic or a functional problem .
Just know that most of the time, the majority of breastfeeding problems have a solution and are transient.
Some simple tips to assist you recognize sufficient milk supply, or to help you know “You got milk”:
It helps a great deal if you put your baby to breast before he is fully awake, it saves both of you energy, tears, and frustration.
1-Make sure you have a good latch
2-If your baby’s suckling is strong and you can detect audible swallowing action, both of these things are good signs; if your baby has good suck, swallow and breathing coordination. This means your baby is able to transfer your milk to his digestive system.
3-If your baby has 6-8 wet diapers daily.
4-At the end of the feeding your baby appears to be satiated, you both have done well, congratulate yourselves.
If your baby is fussy, even though you fed him or her, check the diaper, maybe baby needs a diaper change.

The best restaurant for newborns is at “MOM’S”

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

There is no question about the advantages of breast-milk. If you have delivered a premature baby or a full term baby, mom’s milk is the best gift you can give your newborn. Studies have shown that your body knows what kind of milk to produce  to match your baby’s nutritional needs.  It takes much work, dedication, patience and love to breastfeed a newborn, it is a learning experience for both mother and baby. The rewards are great, but the process is exhausting and time consuming.  You have to think about how much you love this new person that has come to your life, and how much you want what is best for him or her.

This is also the most important job in the whole country or even in the whole world, and no one else can do it for your baby the way you can.  You are the most important person in your baby’s life at this juncture.

If you have questions regarding breastfeeding check with your health care professional, your doctor or your lactation consultant. When you know and understand why you want to breast-feed your baby or why not,  making an informed decision is the way to go.  Some women are not able to breastfeed for health reasons, if you are able and willing to do it, do it for your baby’s health and even your health.
