Why Study History

Monday, April 11th, 2011

History is something that is important to study and learn from; this is true for several reasons. one reason is that one should know his own origins if he is to know himself. When Americans learn United States history, they are learning the roots to their identity and culture; the founding fathers of this country are part of that identity. The same is true with Mexico; the Aztecs and the Mexican revolutions are part of the identity of that particular country as well.

A second reason to learn study history is to protect one’s self from misinformation. It so happens that there is a lot of false history that I have run across, and I have also seen several people fall for it. An example of faked history is that Christopher Columbus was the first to say that that world is round; it never happened. There is also the Movie Zeitgeist which is full of demonstrably false historical claims as any research will show. There are other more serious examples which I will detail since there are too many.

A final reason to study history is to learn from the mistakes of the past. Not learning leaves us ignorant and vulnerable to repeating the the past. Some could say that today we have not learned the lessons of the Vietnam War, for example, and that would be why we arguably have made the same mistakes more recently.

Why Study Native American History

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

In our schools, students will most certainly study United States history. They will usually hear the names of Christopher Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, etc. However, while we study American history, there is an important aspect of that very history that is not so well studied; the history of the first Americans, the Indians. There are not many students would would probably know the names of John Ross (Cherokee), Wahunsenacawh (Powhatan), Tecumseh (Shawnee), or Manuelito (Navajo). Students would probably recognize the name of Pontiac, but I do not have much faith that wouldn’t be because it’s a car.

Many that I have spoken to about the subject of American Indians usually give stereotyoical descriptions about groups of peoples who were only nomadic hunter gatherers; this is not universally true. There were Pre-Columbian Indians who built cities, for example, there was the city of Cahokia which was built by the mound builders, and there were the Anasazi who also were city builders. Both of these ancient American Nations inhabited land in the Present United States.

The learning of American history cannot be complete without learning about the people that had first inhabited this continent for several thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans in 1492. Such learning would aid to repair the stereotypes we have about the Indian peoples.

Though there are not many classes on the subject of Native American history, there are several useful resources to start off with. Below is an except of the documentary series called “500 Nations”:

Health and Life vs Disease and Death!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

After reading this post, your life can not remain the same. First of all you are your own boss, when it comes to what kinds of things you eat, and drink. You are also your own boss when it comes to your body’s activity level. Life is about choices made and to be made, and progressively being made. In parenthesis once you reach the point of death, you have no more choices, it is irreversible.  Today is the day you can make a difference in your own life, you might not know it but you are very important to those around you. Your choices do affect others, they can turn into a cascade of events that modify other individuals lives, for the better or for the worse.

Choosing the right foods for your body, keeps your body healthy, it can give you clarity of thought. It is nature’s way to give you your reward. Rewards are not punishments, they are considered consequences. I like the idea of a good consequence, thus a good reward.

To have good health, we must walk the walk, not just talk the talk. If we do not have good habits  and we disregard the  critical principles of health by overeating, drinking the wrong things, dressing inappropriately for the weather, working without a deserved rest, we can not blame God or others for our diseases and near death events.

Take  time to with a critical eye, examine your actions or choices, know that good health can not be bought with money, other things in life you can not buy, and those are: true friends, time and much searched peace of mind.

Experiencing money challanges?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

More ways to save money. Recently I was reading in the “Penny Saver” more ways to save money, one interesting way I found is using coupons if you are recycling bottles and cans; to add to your savings coupons have been posted for you, with the various recycling center locations where you can bring your recyclable cans, bottles and even newspapers to the recycling center when you turn in your cans and plastic bottles. Check it out. You will be able to get more money for your items.

One more way to save money in a big way is to shop around if you are in need of auto parts. Usually auto parts are more expensive if you get them from the auto dealer, because the company has so much overhead to cover. I have bought from stores like Auto Zone, they are usually pretty good at saving you money, sometimes by 60%. If you know a good mechanic who is honest and can give you a reasonable price for his or her labor, you can save a bundle of money. For instance if your car is leaking oil and you find out that you need to change the oil pan, some dealers sell the oil pan for more than 100.00 dollars, the auto-parts store sells it for less than 50%. You just have to do your homework, this way your buck will buy more, and you will be able to meet the challenge. It sure helps decrease your stress level, if you can save money!

It is very painful when you have to pay 600.00 dollars for something that can be done for 125.00 dollars.

Doctor/ Give yourself a treat!

Friday, June 18th, 2010

It is no secret that you work long hours, sacrifice yourself, getting little sleep, and sometimes not eating or eating on the run. When there is such demand on your time, you must take care of yourself, set some boundaries to protect your health. Try taking 5 minute mini breaks through the day, make sure you get breakfast, lunch and dinner so that you can better do what you do best “take care of others”.
Ponder the thought of you in a relaxing atmosphere, a quiet place, beautiful music, if you like the woods, imagine you walking through a vast exuberant forest. You are breathing pure air and have noticed the beautiful sent of pine trees, soon you come to a small shallow creek and deciding to sit on a rock near the stream of clear water you take a deep cleansing breath. As you sit you are aware of the birds flying around and some birds playing near the water. As you look behind you, you are able to get a glimpse of a squirrel with reddish-brown fur and bushy tail enjoying an acorn, the squirrel sees you and quickly runs up the oak tree. You wish you had a camera to capture the view in pictures, however you did not bring your camera and you are now resigned to the idea of using your mind and your heart to keep the magnificent view in your memory bank. How refreshing it is to take time alone, so you can pull yourself together, treat yourself  you are worth it!

You can ponder and imagine a quiet time, what is more you should turn it into a reality by planning a mini-vacation to your favorite place, revitalize yourself for you, and by default for others.

Memorable Father’s Day!

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Father’s Day is around the corner, you can make Father’s Day a fun and memorable occasion. Visit San Diego, there are many wonderful places to see, one of our favorite places to visit is the zoo. You can save some money if you have a membership card. Usually the card provides free guest passes, and free rides. As a part of the membership benefit  you receive a magazine with discount coupons for the months of June through August. This means you could plan your Father’s Day even if is not exactly on father’s day. June 25 of 2010 the zoo has nighttime activities  at 07:30 p.m., a great bird show . Old San Diego is also another place you can visit, on the weekends they have live music which adds to the ambiance, music while you dine.

Dad might enjoy a quiet day at home, perhaps you can prepare a meal including his favorite entree and dessert, he might even enjoy a noisy day, just being a dad, playing ball in the back yard, or playing a table game with his children .Perhaps reading  a special book, or watching a movie in the evening, while eating popcorn and fruit salad.

The main purpose is to make the day special for him, let him know that he is loved. It does not have to cost a fortune.

More ideas to spice your love life!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Invite your mate to “one enchanted evening together” Go together, or meet at the restaurant where you had your first dinner date. During your dinner date be prepared to play footsie under the table and reminisce. This can take you way back when you were so in love. Perhaps you can remember when you watch the sun set followed by some hot and heavy make out session. Do you remember when you fogged up the windows?
After your dinner date you can go home and give each other a 15 minute back rub, be creative.

You may also plan a romantic sunrise viewing for two. Perhaps you can visit the Grand Canyon or somewhere spectacular, bring your blanket. Fabulously romantic, it sets the mood for the rest of your day!
You can make a deal with your partner, receive two kisses, get two or for more free… must be specific where the kisses may land. Meet in the bedroom for some melted chocolate, strawberries dipped in chocolate, and feed each other, no napkins or towels allowed, a great way to get messy!
Go to the beach together, wear your bikini, do not forget your biggest towel, have your partner spread sunblock all over, skip your eyes.
Have fun as you spice your love life!!!

Reading can create sweet memories!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Reading to your two, three, five year old, and even to your nine year old creates a sweet memory for both you and your child. You form a strong bond with your children. You also have something to talk about, when they grow older and they go through a difficult face in their existence. You can resort to those times when you read together, remember those precious moments when you took time to read, even though you have so many other things to do. When you read recipes and made bread, friendship bread you could take to school to share.Even the cat would want to join when you sat down to read. What a wonderful time you had when you could not go anywhere because you got snowed in, however you could make some hot chocolate and bake some bread, had your children choose the book of their preference and just be there while, they read to you or you took turns reading the story, with no one to interrupt you to go anywhere, because you were stranded anyway! How fun! Your children will never forget that!

Reading if you have not try it, do. It can be the missing link that joins you and your child forever.
